Set Up the Device Monitor at the Licence Level
Learn how to set up the Device Monitor ready for implementation on flows
The Device Monitor is available upon request for an additional charge. Please reach out to UNIwise if you wish to learn more about the module.
The Device Monitor is a software application which is made by UNIwise and can be used on flow types where the lockdown browser is disabled. This includes:
- FLOWassign,
- FLOWhandin,
- FLOWlock without the lockdown browser,
- FLOWmulti without the lockdown browser.
When enabled, the Device Monitor can be set to capture screenshots at random intervals on each participant's device during the participation period of the flow. It can also be set to capture a log of any application opened on a participant's device during the same period as well as setting a list of prohibited applications. The screenshots and application list will be available to managers and invigilators for review via the Participation Monitor. You may set the Device Monitor to capture any or all of these sets of information. The Device Monitor enables an invigilator/manager to detect behaviour that does not conform to the rules of the exam or assessment.
All the above data is compiled within the participation period of a flow.
When the Device Monitor is enabled on a flow, the option for participants to withdraw their submission on FLOWassign and FLOWhandin is automatically disabled. You can enable this setting manually in the flow specific settings under the Advanced tab of the flow.
Initially, the default settings controlling the Device Monitor are set at the licence level. Once complete, each new flow inherits the default settings set, but can then be managed at the flow level by the manager. To find out more about how the manager can control the settings at the flow level, please see the article Using the WISEflow Device Monitor.
Setting Up the Device Monitor at the Licence Level
The default settings for Device Monitor are set-up and enabled via the Licence Configuration tab on the Licence Administration role.
The Device Monitor Default Setup screen is used to determine the settings that will be inherited on each newly created flow in WISEflow.
- Screenshot capturing: Screenshots of each participant's device screen are taken at random intervals.
- Applications tracking: A list of applications running on a participant's device is displayed.
- Prohibited applications: Applications that are must not be used by the participant during the assessment can be listed and grouped into categories. The categories simplify the managing of the flow by the manager e.g. whole categories can be enabled/disabled without having to manage individual applications.
- Search categories: Prohibited applications are grouped into categories and can be searched.
- Add new category: Add a new category and description to which applications can then be added.
- Category heading: Prohibited applications are grouped into categories by the licence administrator, and displayed in the table.
- Category added to the flow: The
icon denotes that the category, and therefore all included prohibited applications, will be added to a new flow by default.
- Manage category: The category name and description can be updated. Each category can also be set to be added to each newly created flow.
- Application name: This is the name of the application (does not need to be exact)
- Process names: This must be the exact process name as shown in the Activity Monitor (Mac) or the Task Manager (Windows). You may need to add multiple process names per application.
- Edit application: Edit either the application name or the process name(s). Multiple process names must be separated by a comma.
- Add application: Add applications to the category, entering the application name and the process name(s). This must be the exact process name as shown in the Activity Monitor (Mac) or the Task Manager (Windows). You may need to add multiple process names per application. Multiple processes must be separated by a comma.
Starting in 2025, the Device Monitor will be updated during three fixed annual release windows in weeks 11, 30, and 43. Participants will only need to update the Device Monitor when their current version is no longer supported.
