New Marking Tool: Usability after the February 2024 release

New functionalities and improvements are added to the New Marking Tool to continuously enhance the usability and marking experience and the Beta status will be removed with the February release. After this release, the tool will support marking work for the following flows:

  • FLOWassign
  • FLOWhandin
  • FLOWlock
  • FLOWoral
  • FLOWattend

These flow types can be marked using the full functionality of the new marking tool (e.g. making annotations, submission and cohort comments; bulk edit annotations; add grade justifications; mark with rubrics; enter and finalise grades). At the moment, rubrics need to be added centrally by a manager. The ability for assessors to add their own rubrics to a flow and add a grade scaler will come at a later stage.

With the new marking tool, it is possible to assess more than only PDF submissions: the new tool displays Excel documents, pictures (PNG, jpg), and Word documents, among other formats. This means that assessors can now assess more file types within WISEflow and less marking needs to be done outside of the system. Additionally, the new marking tool supports a richer way of annotating papers and offers more functionality than the current marking tool.

Marking on FLOWmulti flows will be partly supported following the February 2024 release. Assessors can make use of new and improved functionality to allocate manual marks on questions and items. Inline annotations and a feedback overview have yet to be supported. We are working hard on making these features available so that assessors can use the full annotation functionalities on FLOWmulti flows as soon as possible.

We understand that implementing a new marking tool can be a significant change for institutions. Therefore, we give institutions the flexibility to choose when to start using the new tool for successful implementation. Institutions can choose to make the new marking tool the default on their licence or only enable it on an individual flow basis. Institutions that would like to use the new marking tool as a default on newly created flows can reach out to UNIwise Support, who can enable this on their licence. It will still be possible to switch back to the old marking tool on a flow; however, any marking already completed cannot be transferred between the marking tools. The decision on which marking tool should be used has to be made before any marking begins.

The new marking tool provides greater value and improved functionality, especially when marking written answers or submitted files by participants. With the release in February, the quick navigation between submissions and participants will be improved and unified across the different flow types enabling assessors to navigate between participant submissions more easily. The grading tab will include an overview and count of all annotations and comments for this submission. Furthermore, the overview will show how many annotations and comments have been shared with the participant. A smaller top bar leaves more room to review the submitted documents. Finally, assessors will be able to sort the list of participants by participant index, participant name, entered grades or final grades. Additionally, they can filter the list to only show participants with a specific grade state or by co-assessor(s) that have been assigned to them.

For the remainder of 2024, we are planning to release small increments of features that will further enrich the new marking tool. Customers will be informed about new functionality for the new marking tool with each release communication. We are currently not planning to deprecate the current marking tool before 2025. More information will follow during 2024.
