What are web sources?

Web sources are public websites whose content has been indexed by Originality so it can be compared against submissions. Matches against web content appear in the Matches tab of the similarity report under the Web category, together with a link to the source page.

UNIwise maintains the underlying index of web sources used by Originality. License users can also add sources they believe should be included, for example a discipline-specific repository or a national open-access archive.

The web sources page

The Web Sources page lists the web pages your license has added to the Originality web sources database. For each page you can see:

  • Submitted URL: the page that was added
  • Description: the description entered when the page was added
  • Added by: the user who added it, or API integration if it was added through the API
  • Date Submitted: when it was added
  • Status: Pending until the page has been crawled, then Crawled
  • Last Updated: when the page was last crawled

Use the Search by URL field to check whether a page has already been added before you submit it. Click the refresh button to update the list and statuses.

Adding a new web source

  1. Go to the Web Sources page in Originality at https://wiseflow-originality.net/.
  2. Click + Add web source. Specify the following information:
    1. The website URL (or domain)
    2. Enter a description. For example, why the source is relevant, the discipline it serves, or the type of content it hosts.
  3. Click Submit URL to submit the web source to Originality's database.

Tip! To add many sources at once, use the crawler API endpoints from Originality.

Requirements

Before adding web sources to Originality, make sure to check that they comply with the following guidelines:

  • Use publicly accessible pages – submit pages anyone can open without signing in. Content behind a paywall, library subscription, or institutional login will now work.
  • Link to the exact page – submit the page with the content. Not a homepage, manu, or list of search results. Originality cannot follow links from them.
  • Use a permanent web address – some links are temporary and stop working. Open the page in your browser, then copy the link from the address bar at the top.
  • Submit pages, not files – Originality includes the text and images on the page itself, but not PDFs, Word documents, or other linked files.

Most importantly, make sure the source adds material value for similarity detection.

Searching indexed web sources

You can search the web sources already indexed for your license. This lets you check whether a site is covered, avoid adding the same source twice, and see how current the indexed content is.

  • Administrators can search all web sources across the license.
  • Assessors can search the web sources they have added themselves.

Each result in the overview shows when the page was last crawled.

Removing a suggestion

To remove a web source, click the delete icon on its row on the Web Sources page. You can remove sources with either status, Pending or Crawled.
