What are web sources?

Web sources are public websites whose content has been indexed by Originality so it can be compared against submissions. Matches against web content appear in the Matches tab of the similarity report under the Web category, together with a link to the source page.

UNIwise maintains the underlying index of web sources used by Originality. License users can suggest additional sources they believe should be included. For example, a discipline-specific repository or a national open-access archive.

Adding a new web source

  1. Go to the Web Sources page in Originality at https://wiseflow-originality.net/.
  2. Click + Add web source. Specify the following information:
    1. The website URL (or domain)
    2. Enter a description. For example, why the source is relevant, the discipline it serves, or the type of content it hosts.
  3. Click Submit URL to submit the web source to Originality's database.

Requirements

Before adding web sources to Originality, make sure to check that they comply with the following guidelines:

  • Use publicly accessible pages – submit pages anyone can open without signing in. Content behind a paywall, library subscription, or institutional login will now work.
  • Link to the exact page – submit the page with the content. Not a homepage, manu, or list of search results. Originality cannot follow links from them.
  • Use a permanent web address – some links are temporary and stop working. Open the page in your browser, then copy the link from the address bar at the top.
  • Submit pages, not files – Originality includes the text and images on the page itself, but not PDFs, Word documents, or other linked files.

Most importantly, make sure the source adds material value for similarity detection.

Removing a suggestion

You can delete your own suggestions from the Web Sources list at any time, including suggestions that have already been submitted but not yet reviewed. Once a source has been added to the index by UNIwise, removal must be requested via the Service Centre.
